EPIDEMIO

Earth Observation for Epidemiology

This was a demonstration project to provide EO-derived information to epidemiologists in support to the study, monitoring and early warning of human disease.

The epidemiology of diseases, both infectious and non-communicable, is a highly complex scientific field. Environmental factors are just one among many types of information required by epidemiologists to study and monitor risks to human health. Earth observation is an under-exploited resource in this field, and has the potential to supply new and improved types of information.

The objective of this DUE project was to demonstrate the value of EO-derived information on the environment to epidemiologists working to study, monitor and predict threats to human health. User Requirements were provided by a group of epidemiologists who are enthusiastic to capitalise on the advantages that EO-derived information can provide for their work.

EO derived information products were provided in response to these requirements, including: digital elevation maps, urban maps, cartography, maps of water bodies, vegetation maps, land surface temperature maps, and a service for monitoring wind-blown Sahelian dust.
