The main objective of the ITALSCAR project was to generate reference Burn Scars Maps (BSM) and the associated catalogue, based on the use of historical Remote Sensing data from European Earth Observation (EO) satellite missions, for supporting the operational Fire Disaster management over Italy at national and at regional level.

In addition to the generation of the BSM products required by the Italian Civil Protection Authority, the Contractors were asked to perform an assessment of the quality of the service provision and to cost a sustainable service provision.

Finally, the Contractors had also been tasked to establish a BSM System Qualification Standard that could be applicable at European Level to similar information systems that would be developed on national or regional initiatives.
