Sentinel-2 for Agriculture (Sen2Agri)

The Sentinel-2 Agriculture project aims at providing to the international user community validated algorithms and best practices to produce EO products for agriculture monitoring preparing for the exploitation of Sentinel-2 observations.  Sentinel-2 Agriculture main activities will focus on user driven development of agricultural EO products, benchmarking and validating the required algorithms and finally demonstration of resulting Sentinel-2 EO products and services to users of the global agricultural community. The project responds and contributes directly to the GEOGLAM initiative.

Earth Observation (EO) can contribute to agricultural monitoring as a proven source for transparent, timely and consistent information on the agricultural productivity at global and regional scale. Following the G20 Action Plan on Food Price Volatility (Paris 2011) the Group on Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring (GEOGLAM) initiative was created to "strengthen global agricultural monitoring by improving the use of remote sensing tools for crop production projections and weather forecasting".  In parallel, the Joint Experiment of Crop Assessment and Monitoring (JECAM) was launched to enable the global agricultural monitoring community to compare results based on disparate sources of data, using various methods, over a variety of local or regional cropping systems.

The Sen2-Agri project is intended as a major contribution to the R&D component of the GEOGLAM initiative and to the JECAM network activities. The project will demonstrate at national scale the benefit of the Sentinel-2 mission for the agriculture domain across a range of crops and agricultural practices. The project will deliver a processing system based on an open source and portable solution to convert Sentinel-2 L1C data into relevant agricultural monitoring EO products. Following GEOGLAM requirements the Sen2-Agri focuses on four EO products:
  • Cloud-free surface reflectance composites provided on a monthly basis in all the S2 bands at full native resolution
  • Dynamic cropland mask - binary map provided on a regular grid at 10 meter resolution and updated every month;
  • Cultivated crop type map: map of the 5 main crop types of the respective region, delivered twice a year (first half and end of the season) on a regular grid at 10 meter resolution;
  • Vegetation status: maps of LAI delivered at 20-m resolution and on a weekly basis, NDVI metrics (start date and length of the season, amplitude) delivered from the first half of the season.
