Research Organisation
The GKSS Research Centre is member of the Helmholtz Association of Research Centres, which is the biggest research organisation in Germany. With a staff of about 750 and an annual budget of 65 M. Euros GKSS serves mainly three research areas: material science, separation techniques and coastal research.
The GKSS Institute for Coastal Research has its focus on advanced observation techniques including microwave and optical remote sensing as well as modelling and information retrieval techniques. GKSS has a joint research program with the Alfred Wegener Institute of Polar and Marine Research (AWI).
Part of the institute is the laboratory for bio-optical remote sensing, which comprises a staff of 12 scientists and engineers. The main focus is the development of remote sensing techniques for coastal waters and tidal flats and their application for monitoring programs. The long experience includes development and adaptation of optical instruments, in situ measurements of optical properties, concentrations of water constituents and primary production, radiative transfer modelling and the development of algorithms including atmospheric correction and retrieval of coastal water constituents.
The laboratory was coordinator of or partner in a number of remote sensing projects, including 9 EU funded projects (MAST I, MAST II, COASTLOOC, COLORS, NAOC, REVAMP, IMARQ, BIOPTIS, HIMOM), national research programs (MAPP I, MAPP II, ENVOC) and ESA funded R&D projects.
For MERIS two studies on the use of fluorescence and the possibility to determine yellow substance were carried out in 1985/86, which were part of the basis for the design and specification of MERIS. Since 1995 the lab has been part of the Expert Support Laboratories (ESL) for MERIS. GKSS has developed the case 2 water algorithm, which is based on the neural network and now implemented in the ground segment. Presently GKSS is member of the MERIS AATSR Validation Team (MAVT).
Furthermore, GKSS has developed for ESA the algorithms for atmospheric correction and retrieval of water constituents for MOS data, both of which are based on neural network technology.
The head of the laboratory, R. Doerffer, is member of the MERIS SAG and was PI for SeaWiFS.
